Now that you have a beautiful home, it's time to consider the peace of mind that comes with a good quality, comprehensive home insurance policy.
Buildings Insurance
A good home building insurance policy will cover you for the majority of structural problems with your home including damage by third parties and fire. Usually a buildings insurance policy is required when you have a mortgage on your home, but is generally recommended in all cases.
Often, your mortgage provider will give you their standard buildings insurance policy at the same time as the mortgage, however it is often a fairly basic policy and these packaged insurances can be quite expensive when compared to standalone policies. In the majority of cases, your mortgage will not tie you to a particular insurance company, as long as you remain covered. When switching policy you will usually be required to send proof of the new insurance to the mortgage provider. This is generally a very simple process and merely involves posting or faxing a copy of the policy document. If you are unsure, it is wise to speak to your mortgage adviser before cancelling any existing policy.
Home Contents Insurance
As well as being covered for any damage or circumstance relating to the actual structure of your house, you will need to ensure that the contents of your house (ie your possessions) are covered by a comprehensive policy. Home contents insurance will generally cover items stored in your home such as audio/visual equipment (tv, dvd player etc), computers and laptops and all other items that you own and keep at your home.
Depending on the policy, and often with the cheaper poilicies, you may find that certain items are not insured, and it is always worthwhile checking your policy to be sure that you are covered for all of the things you want. If you have recently bought some expensive items, you should also check that your contents insurance's maximum limit is sufficient.
The more comprehensive policy will have an unlimited coverage value and often cover you for items stored outside such as bicycles and even laptops when taken outside the home.
